Copenhagen Offshore Partners Opens UK-based Global Competence Centre to Focus on ‘Next Frontier’ Floating Wind

Posted on: March 30th, 2023 by Nicolas Nielsen No Comments

March 30, 2023 – Copenhagen:

Copenhagen Offshore Partners (COP), a world leader in the development and construction of offshore wind projects, has opened a new office to host its Global Floating Offshore Wind Competence Centre (GFLOWCC).

The Edinburgh centre provides the ideal location for COP to further grow its team and accelerate the large-scale deployment of floating offshore wind (FLOW) across the UK and globally.

COP is the exclusive offshore wind development partner to Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), one of the world’s leading green infrastructure fund managers. One third of the partnership’s 50+ GW offshore wind portfolio is comprised of FLOW.

Alan Hannah, UK CEO and Partner at COP said:

“The Global FLOW Competence Centre opening is an important moment in what will be a significant year for FLOW. It puts Scotland and the UK at the core of our global floating offshore wind ambitions, building on strong maritime heritage, a history of innovation, and world-class energy supply chains.

The UK has established an early capability in FLOW and while it must continue to innovate, there can be no substitute for learning through doing. We must get projects in the water to better understand how to industrialise floating technology in the face of fierce global competition.

The centre will play a crucial role to build the industry’s understanding of how to efficiently maximise the floating offshore wind opportunity so that we can achieve a highly localised, industrialised model for deployment for future commercial scale projects.”

FLOW is the next frontier for offshore wind and a key component in an effective approach to achieve global climate ambitions. It can be deployed in deep waters where traditional fixed foundation offshore wind technologies cannot, harnessing the vast wind resources which are found offshore in many parts of the world.

The launch of COP’s Global FLOW Competence Centre comes as the UK Government announces a new Energy Security Plan: Powering Up Britain. This highlights the importance of technologies such as FLOW to boost domestic renewable energy production capabilities.

Welcoming the opening of COP’s GFLOWCC,  Rt. Hon. Graham Stuart MP,  Minister of State for Energy Security and Net Zero said:

“The UK has a world leading position in FLOW and I’m grateful to COP for its investment in what is a fantastic FLOW opportunity in the UK.  Partnership between business and Government is vital, which is why I’m delighted to see the launch of the £160m Floating Offshore Wind Manufacturing Investment Scheme (FLOWMIS), which will make a difference to delivering the port infrastructure upon which the industry depends.”

COP is currently developing the Pentland Floating Offshore Wind Farm, the world’s largest floating demonstration project, off the coast of Caithness, Scotland. Early FLOW projects such as Pentland are vital to demonstrate how the industry can both reduce cost and localise key project work packages.

Together with partners SSE and Marubeni, COP is also developing the 3.6GW Ossian Floating Offshore Wind Farm, which will be located approximately 80KM southeast of the Aberdeenshire coast.  It is also preparing for the Celtic Sea FLOW leasing round later this year.

March 22, 2023 – Copenhagen:

Copenhagen Offshore Partners (COP), a world leader in development and construction of offshore wind projects, has expanded its development portfolio in Italy with three new projects, Tyrrhenian, Nurax, and Poseidon. With these new additions, COP is developing five floating offshore wind projects in Italy which total almost 3 GW of capacity, one of the largest in the country.

The full portfolio is controlled by the GreenIT and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) consortium, which acquired the three new sites this month. CIP is the world’s largest dedicated fund manager within greenfield renewable energy investments. The new areas will be co-developed by a project team led by Copenhagen Offshore Partners, the exclusive offshore wind development partner to CIP, and Italian companies with proven experience in the development of offshore wind farms such as Nice Technology and 7 Seas Wind Power.

“These new projects reinforce COP’s position as a leader in floating offshore wind development in Italy,” said Alan Hannah, Partner and Europe Market Development Lead at COP. “Italy has all of the necessary ingredients to support project delivery for the burgeoning floating wind market as well as to establish important supply chain opportunities.”

”Our growing portfolio in Italy is the result of years’ worth of local engagement by COP and our project partners since 2020,” said Michele Schiavone, Italy CEO at COP. “Three gigawatts empowers us to beneficially scale our activities, from design to procurement and site investigation. We are thrilled to see our pipeline growing.”

The three new floating projects are located on average 30 km from the coast and have a total capacity of approximately 2 GW. The Tyrrhenian project, located in Latium off the coast of Civitavecchia, will have a total capacity of up to 540 MW. Nurax and Poseidon, in Sardinia off the coast of Olbia, will have respective capacities of around 500 MW and 1,000 MW. The floating foundations for Tyrrhenian, Nurax, and Poseidon will utilize innovative technological solutions aimed at minimizing environmental and visual impacts.

The new projects will also benefit from technological and logistical synergies with the portfolio’s other two offshore wind projects, 7SeasMed in Sicily and Ichnusa Wind Power in Sardinia, of which COP is also co-leading development. 7SeasMed is a 250MW floating offshore wind project, and Ichnusa Wind Power is contracted for 500MW.

The almost 3GW project development portfolio in Italy will support the country’s greater climate and economic goals of which Italy has an ambition for 20GW of new offshore wind capacity by the end of decade. Floating wind is projected to be a significant component of that goal. Altogether, the portfolio will could power approximately 2.5 million Italian households.
